Sinopsis

Humility can only spring from humiliation, otherwise it’s vanity in disguise.
Jean Genet, Querelle de Brest.
In 1933, the Papin sisters, two housemaids from Le Mans, brutally murdered their boss’s wife and daughter. The crime shocked the French nation and became known as the Papin Affair. Fourteen years later, and clearly inspired by this story, Jean Genet published one of his most emblematic plays, The Maids. Half a century later, the Mexican collective Vaca 35 have transformed The Maids into Lo único que necesita una gran actriz, es una gran obra y las ganas de triunfar (“The only thing a great actress needs is a great work and the will to triumph”). The play brings the audience closer to the intimate universe and diminutive space of the maids’ bedroom, enabling us to enter into Genet’s world and to understand his criticism of social stereotypes.
The Vaca 35 collective create an explosive cocktail that, in their own words, by making theatre and its representation the only possible way out, combines eating, drinking, dancing and a little bit of fairy tales.”
Vaca 35 is a collective of stage directors and actors, based in Mexico. Since 2007, they have been developing a series of performances, laboratories and theatrical research projects, autonomous critical thought and creative independence.
