Teatro Maria Matos has changed
Over the last few years, Maria Matos Teatro Municipal has offered the public the chance to visit its most unusual spaces and enjoy the events taking place there, while also spreading into other places in this and other neighbourhoods, imagining stages everywhere – from the terrace of a former military hospital to the swimming-pools of Areeiro, or even the façade of the Hotel Lutécia. It has been a home for the performing arts, for a programme of events designed specifically for children, and for all kinds of music concerts. Besides this, it has also been a place for thinking and for imagining bridges between society and what takes place on the stage. In our initial phase, we staged our own creations, but later we began to work through commissions co-productions and the hosting of other productions, seeking to encourage the development of new artistic works and new networks, and building new relations with our audiences, who helped us to discover, anticipate and reflect upon what could be gained from our being together in this way and what it meant to us all.
Beginning in September 2018, Maria Matos Teatro Municipal will embark on a new chapter in its history. With this new change introduced into its model of management, Teatro Maria Matos will be leased to private cultural agents, who will offer a wider theatre programme — comedy, drama and musical. The mission previously undertaken by the team of Maria Matos Teatro Municipal will be continued at other venues around the city. The creation, production and presentation of emerging and experimental projects will now be in the hands of a new artistic team working in the space of Teatro do Bairro Alto, in Lisbon’s Príncipe Real area. Teatro Luís de Camões, in Belém, will take over responsibility for this programme, making it the first theatre in Lisbon to be completely dedicated to artistic creation for children.
