Showing curiosity, asking questions, wanting to understand – it’s all part of childhood. There’s no cheating possible, though, with children’s questions, much less when they reveal a philosophical complexity that is spontaneous and comes to them naturally. The aim is first of all to find answers for the questions posed by youngsters, using them to create a space for critical reflection on racism.
As an educational action designed to combat racism, this mini-conference also involves raising awareness and adopting a position: we aren’t born racist, we become racist. We need to deconstruct prejudices, to become aware of what conditions us and to explain some difficult words, such as xenophobia, discrimination, melanin, slavery, apartheid and prejudice.
With a master’s degree in Philosophy from Lisbon’s Nova University under the supervision of the philosopher José Gil, Rita Pedro has been working with the laboratory of research in Practical and Applied Philosophy at the University of the Aegean. Since 1999, she has been developing projects in Philosophy for Children (P4C), working in this area as a trainer and youth leader. She coordinated P4C projects aimed at children and young people in a migration context, at the Associação Moinho da Juventude (2006-2010), while, in Cape Verde, she also undertook research into working with P4C in a community context (2009-2011). Since 2012, she has worked in partnership with various artists, actors and dancers, on the co-creation and promotion of artistic and philosophical experiences, namely with Sílvia Real in Grupo 23 Amarelo: Silêncio.
