Drifting through the neighbourhood and its times

Sinopsis

In the Chelas area, there are remains of old estates and monasteries, eighteenth-century palaces and ruins of nineteenth-century factories, modern villas built in the mid-twentieth century, social housing that began to be built in the 1970s, viaducts that separate the neighbourhoods while connecting other areas of the city.

There are allotments that were improvised years ago, and others that have been reorganised by the municipal council. In what is increasingly one of the main centres of contemporary Lisbon, there is a herd of goats and sheep watched over by a shepherd. There are all manner of historical periods mixed together in this piece of the city, particularly around the neighbourhood of Bairro Marquês de Abrantes. Here the present is like a crossroads where the various pasts meet with ideas of the future.

 Cartography in motion [Cartografia em movimento] suggests that we take a walk through Bairro Marquês de Abrantes to discover these different times and the way in which they are now lived and experienced, shown to us through sound and image installations arranged along a route marked on a map. The final moment of this journey will be marked by a meeting between visitors and residents, all centred around the collective game that takes place here every day.
