Dr. Voxoids next move
co-organized by Teatro Maria Matos and Granular
Sinopsis
In a show in which the artist himself doesn’t know what will happen next, Jaap Blonk adopts the guise of one of his many characters, Dr. Voxoid. All the materials of his rich and vast repertoire may be introduced: sound poetry, including his own pieces and some “classics”, such as Kurt Schwitters’ Ursonate; songs with invented languages, such as Onderlands, which uses and accentuates the very particular sound of the Dutch language; phonetic processes, sometimes acoustic, sometimes electronically processed; a video animation presented in real time and interacting with the sounds produced by the voice; speeches about bizarre topics; soundscapes; free improvisations.
Having started out as a saxophonist working in the field of jazz and improvisation, Blonk ended up centring his attention on the voice, combining the tradition of phonetic poetry that came from Dadaism with the experimental vocalisms of Joan La Barbara and Phil Minton. By including sampling and electronic synthesis in his performances, as well as algorithmic compositional systems, the Dutch musician and poet has rapidly imposed his unique stage presence, performing solo or in collaborations with Maja Ratkje, Mats Gustafsson, Nicolas Collins or The Ex, as well as the leader of such bands as the energetic and syncopated Braaxtaal trio. He is also the head of the Kontrans record label.
