Sinopsis

Alexei Yurchak is professor of Anthropology at University of California, Berkeley, and the author of the book Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More: The Last Soviet Generation. In this talk he will examine how everyday behaviours can make large ideological systems collapse. For the Soviet people, the collapse of their state came as a complete surprise, and at the same time, as something natural. That dramatic event exposed a paradox: while most citizens experienced the system as eternal and immutable, they had also been always prepared for its disintegration.
